The DLXSF shop was one of my first places I went when I first moved here. They are known across the nations (if not the world) and are a destination spot for all traveling skateboarders that visit San Francisco. I’m proud to say that I printed some shirts for them. Square State Skate is a Colorado based business that does skateboard lessons, clubs and camps for youth around the greater Boulder area. With a growing number of large companies still thinking it’s ok to take business away from small skater owned shops, Square State Skate designed this shirt as a direct attack on the subject. Just as political cartoons did in old newspapers, this design says it all in this simple but powerful one color design.

Support skater owned skate shops! It may seem like a no-brainer but for some reason these big mall stores and websites are still getting bigger as small skater owned skate shops disappear by the day. If local shops go, skateboarding will start to fade with it. The die-hards that have been doing it for more than half of our lives will never fade, but skateboarding as a whole would suck so bad if the only shop in your town was Skateboard WORLD in the mall.

Square State Skate is about working with youths (as well as parents) and not just with their kick flips. They teach the kids the importance of eating well, skate park etiquette, treating others as you wish to be treated, and the importance of friendship and looking out for one another. Its like the Boy Scouts of America instead Square State is coed and all skateboarders. If this was around when I was a kid, I would have been there everyday!

Thinking With Type

The same day I finished Lettering & Type by Bruce and Nolan, I went out and bought Thinking With Type by Ellen Lupton. When I was still attending the Maryland Institute College of Art I took Ellen’s History of Graphic Design class and it was amazing. In the years since I finished school I haven’t been so motivated to read about design and typography as I am right now, and it feels really good. College seems like such a blur (an a long time ago), but reading these books makes me feel like I’m there again. I’m there listening to Paul Carlos call my work “lowbrow” (a nice way of saying shitty) and Ken Barber asking me why I was even enrolled in school. “If you want to live in California and design skateboards you don’t need a education for that”. Thanks Ken. Wish you would’ve dropped that one on me back in 1997 before I enrolled!

But truthfully, reading these books reminds me why I was there in the first place. Anyone can be an artist, anyone can be a designer, but do you know the do’s and don’t of the trade? I sometimes think I do. Until I look at old work and always ask myself “what the hell was I thinkin there?”

Anyways, if anyone has suggestions on what I should read next, shoot me an email. I’m ready to keep this train rollin’.

I went to school with the two dudes that wrote this book and it’s amazing. I need to say, it has blown me away on multiple levels. The first being… “Bruce and Nolan wrote this”? Its is crazy. I remember these two borderline fuck ups that were in a metal band called Double Dagger that made epic posters and flyers for their shows and wrote songs about fonts. But then I need to be real, that was 10 years ago! gettin old…

I found this online and asked my brother to get it for me for Christmas (thanks Greg) and he came through. I’m reading it now and can’t put it down. It is really, really good. Id even say essential reading for anyone interested in design in anyway.

You should also check out their site Post Typography . It’s been a long time but I remember Bruce and Nolan as epic dudes doing great design. I look up to both of them.

J. Fish Saratoga Tee

Ol’ J. Fish hit me up about these benefit tees he needed printed for a skatepark that he worked at when he was just a young lad. Dude is a stand up dude. I was stoked that he called me to get the job done…

After a short back and forth with the Fish Man about some color matching, we nailed it. And BTW, “antique white” is Pantone #7499… just sayin.

Cruel Summer goes CMYK

Josh from Rocinante Records in San Francisco contacted me about printed tees for the band Cruel Summer. The artwork was done by ol’ Jay Howell. We decided the best way to get the job done would be to print it CMYK process (cyan, magenta, yellow & black) to get the effect we were looking for. It was a success! The shirts look amazing!

Keep an eye out for Cruel Summer playing here in the bay area! And, of course, for the merch table!
